Introduction

Brushing your teeth wondering if you need a jacket for the day? Sitting in the climate controlled office considering BBQ-ing after work? Trying to pack appropriate clothing for your trip next week? Looking for something fun to do outdoors this weekend?

WeatherWear is the smartest weather app, able to suggest clothing and activities based on the weather conditions. Even personalize your suggestions based on the clothes in your closet and your favorite activities.

Fun Fact: several months after completing this thought project, Underground Weather launched a similar suggested activities feature .

Problem Statement

What is it most people want to know when looking up the weather on their phone? Not just the temperature, or the forecast, but why do they want to know it? Research found people often look up the weather to know how to dress for the the day, if they can plan outdoor activities this weekend, or to know what to pack for a trip; to know if they need a jacket, umbrella, or a tundra parka. So why doesn't a weather app tell people that stuff too?

Problem

UX Research

The competitive analysis and user survey for WeatherWear heavily influenced the features and direction, determining what features were missing in the market. Without prompting, most users stated they looked at the weather to determine what to wear or bring with them for the day or trip. Some even wanted to know what activities were appropriate for the weather.

“So I can plan what I wear accordingly and know if I should bring a jacket or umbrella.”

“Immediately know when I wake up what the day will bring. Helps me get the kids ready for the day along with myself.”

"In case I want to bike commute or drive."

"To plan activities and things to do based on the weather."

These discoveries were used to design WeatherWear's primary features of clothing and activity suggestion, in addition to all the standard weather information users expect in a weather app.

UX Design

WeatherWear has all the expected information from a weather app: the forecast for today and the next 7 days, and a payed version to remove ads and save preferences.

What sets WeatherWear apart are the clothing and activity suggestions. By creating a payed account the user can also save their usual clothes and favorite activities for in-app suggestions based on weather. Because this feature is what sets WeatherWear apart from other apps, the settings was considered a key experience for this app.

Wireframes

Design is an iterative process - after the initial research, empathy building, and user flows, there was lots of wireframing.
