The social media app built specifically for the world of Flat Track Roller Derby.

Introduction

Roller Derby teams have a fan base of family, friends, and other spectators who want to support the players of this fast-paced, empowering, and inclusive culture. Teams spend a lot of time reaching out to spectators and the surrounding community on social media, but it's difficult to reach all the fans on one platform.

Welcome to Jamster, the app to help teams engage the spectators, extend the atmosphere of inclusivity the game operates in, and turn first time spectators into returning fans or even potential players.

Problem Statement

The original brief was for a rules app designed to help the family and friends of Roller Derby players understand this fast-growing, exciting sport, that can be utterly baffling for first-time spectators.

However, a basic rules app left little draw for users to continue engaging with  the app after learning the rules. What were the pain points in the world of Roller Derby this app could address?

UX Research

Research and interviews were used to get a picture for what teams, players, and fans struggle with in the world of Roller Derby. â€‹

  • Social media is the main means of communication between the Team and the fan base, and most teams have a board member dedicated to keeping all of their social media outlets up to date.

  • There is no centralized location for communicating game dates, parties, recruiting events, apparel sales, and game scores.

  • Family members (like Grandma) want to see pictures of their player, but are not willing or able to sit on Facebook and scroll through the 100s of photos taken by spectators and the game photographers, just to find the 5 photos of their player.

  • Family members and fans are often confused by the Roller Derby player names (ex. Hoosier Momma, Kate N. Destroy, Hat Trixxie).

  • A place to display ads and use Google Analytics could draw in more sponsors for the team.

These discoveries were used to pivot the design, moving from a simple rules app, to a social media app that provides the team a central location to communicate with the fan base.

Jamster has a "team" side of the app (not pictured) and a "spectator" side (shown). Upon downloading, spectators are prompted to create an account or go straight to the rules, which is available with or without an account.

During the account creation experience, the spectators may select one or more teams and players to follow, which will fill their news feed. Spectators are notified when games are scheduled for their teams, their players are tagged in pictures, final scores are posted, and team events are created.

Team profiles have roster sections, where the player's name, Derby name, and picture are displayed. Users are encouraged to use the app to check in to games they are attending, vote for the Most Valuable Player of the game, and use other game-specific features of the app.

Wireframes

Jamster quickly became a really complex social media tool for Roller Derby teams. But not all the desired features would make it into a real life app launch.  Wireframes were an important step in the process to determining what features were appropriate for the MVP and what could be included in later updates.

UI Design

Roller Derby is bold, inclusive, and intense. The social media app connecting the spectators and the teams needs to reflect that spirt.

Using bold colors and a simple logo, the app can shine brightly, even in the fierce world of the roller derby.
