UX Strategy Projects

I oversaw the strategy and implementation of many projects as a UX Lead at Meijer, but there were two that I was most involved in:

  • Architecture of front end web components

  • Cart Out of Stock experience across app and web

UX Component Architecture

Project 1

Twofold Problem:

  1. The front-end components on the website were disconnected, even when multiple components used the same UI atom. When minor UI changes occurred the dev support teams needed to find all instances of that UI atom across dozens of components. This led to countless inconsistencies across Meijer.com and every update to an atom style cost extra to implement.

  2. The the marketing team uses a CRM system to select those front-end components and build all web pages that are not a foundational experience. The CRM experience was built internally and was not intuitive, creating hours of inefficiencies for simple tasks - and many of these components needed changes weekly when ad's and promos changed.

Solution:

The UI of the components wasn't going to drastically change, so this was primarily a technical and UX architectural challenge that existed in that grey space where no single team owned the experience.

Having the most technical background on the UX team, I collaborated with the architectural lead, marketing users, development support teams, POs, PMs, and the fledgling design system team to improve both the customer facing front-end and CRM experiences at the same time.

I partnered with the architecture lead to define how we could nest UI atoms (ex. buttons) and UX logic within larger components (ex. different variants of a carousel). Then, any future UI changes to an atom would propagate to all instances and components the atom was nested in.

This nesting would:

  • Reduce development time and cost to maintain an entire  component library.

  • Increase UI consistency across the website, improving customer experience.

  • Scaling and re-skinning of the component library to other brands and websites under the Meijer umbrella.

Because this was such a significant change to the CRM architecture, it was also an opportunity to improve the component selection and page building experience for the marketing team.

This included:

  • Consistent and standard desktop patterns for color and image selection.

  • One location in the component library to select any variant of the same component.
